VandenBerge Middle School Expansion and Renovation

Stahl managed the phased expansion and renovation project at Vandenberg Middle School in Elk River, Minnesota. The 55,000 square-foot phased expansion and renovation project has transformed the school’s entrance into a more inviting space for students.

The transformation enhances the aesthetic appeal and, more importantly, improves the safety and security of students. Key changes include the addition of a secure vestibule, relocation of the main office, and a comprehensive redesign of the parking lot. Furthermore, the creation of a centralized commons area and a state-of-the-art media center has greatly improved circulation within the school. These new spaces offer students extended learning environments, fostering collaboration and independent study.

Constructability Issues

This project took place in an occupied space which required a strategic and collaborative approach. Our primary objective was to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment, despite the ongoing construction activities. We devised and executed a meticulous safety plan, including clear signage, physical barriers to prevent unauthorized access, and the implementation of regular safety inspections.

To minimize the impact on students, we coordinated with school administrators to schedule potentially disruptive work during off-hours. Regular safety briefings were conducted to keep students and staff informed about the construction progress and to advise them on necessary precautions.
