Labor Day began in the late 1800s to recognize the workers who helped build strong, thriving communities. Rooted in the movement for safer working conditions and fair wages, the holiday remains closely connected to the AEC industry. From clients and architects to contractors, fabricators, and project teams, we are grateful for the people whose expertise, dedication, and teamwork bring meaningful projects to life.
This Labor Day, we’re recognizing a few of the People Behind the Projects, starting with Senior Project Manager, Dave Schultz and the Hamline Midway Library.
The Grand Opening of the Hamline Midway Library took place on July 18, marking a significant milestone for the Saint Paul community. The new 10,000 SF facility is the result of years of planning, community engagement, and construction, creating a welcoming and accessible gathering place that honors the neighborhood’s history while serving future generations. Designed to bring people together, the library offers modern resources and flexible spaces that support learning, connection, and community life.
This project was made possible not only by the City of Saint Paul, LSE Architects, and trades people but through the thoughtful incorporation of local artists and their work.
Public art features include a children’s area installation by Sharp Signs and Blackbird Revolt, custom bike racks by Lucy Michell, an exterior mural by Rock “CYFI” Martinez and George “EWOK” Thompson, and an interior installation by Shea Maze, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for library visitors.
Leading Stahl’s efforts on this project was Senior Project Manager Dave Schultz, whose experience and collaborative approach helped guide the project from construction through completion. Throughout the process, Dave worked closely with project stakeholders to navigate the complexities of replacing a beloved community landmark while ensuring the finished facility reflected the priorities voiced by thousands of residents during the planning and design process.
Dave’s leadership was particularly valuable in coordinating the technical and sustainability-focused features incorporated into the library. The project includes environmentally responsible systems such as geothermal heating and cooling and solar energy components, supporting the City’s long-term sustainability goals while creating a comfortable and efficient facility for library users. Dave also shared insights into these systems during educational tours of the project, highlighting Stahl’s commitment to community engagement beyond construction.
